MA 5902 - Production Study 1

Learning Objectives:

This is a practice based programme that examines production processes in a long running, high volume British TV Drama series. By studying one programme in depth and its place in the schedule, students will be able to understand the organisation, management, funding, budgeting and scheduling of drama production. This will involve studying individual episodes, scripts and overall series story and character arcs. Students will look at Series bibles and scripts, conduct background research on the production team, cast and writers as well as analysing press and audience reaction to the series. They will also be meeting writers and directors working on the series.

The course unit will be assessed by a Production Study. This will demonstrate an understanding of the logistic, budgetary and creative parameters of television production including an explanation and analysis of how the students approached the study assessment tasks.

Learning Outcomes:

1) Understand the key challenges of producing long running television series

2) Appreciate the role of long running drama series in the television landscape.

3) Apprehend the organsational, management and financing models for a long running drama series.

4) Analyse the production team of the study drama series and understand the various roles from a producers' standpoint.

5) Consider the audience profile of the series and how such target audiences fits within the economic and cultural priorities of television.

6) Understand the long term status of the series.

Formative Assessment:

Producer Analysis of Sample Script (1,500 words)

Summative Assessment:
