19-20 MU2251/MU3251: Practical & Creative Orchestration

This course will introduce students to the principles of orchestration in both the historic and contemporary canon, examining and comparing techniques and approaches to the discipline. The list of topics to be covered in the lectures includes: instrumental projection and weight, vertical combination, instrumental timbre and solos, “colour” in orchestration, contrapuntal music and counter melodies, orchestral balance and the “tutti”, the orchestral sections, difficult instruments, orchestration and instrumentation in contemporary music, professional practice, orchestrating film and commercial music, drama and atmosphere, orchestrating rhythm, timing and pacing.
