19-20 ML2400: Questions of Translation and Transcultural Communication
This course will outline and question key trends in translation studies. The aim throughout is to consider how meanings are carried between and affect different cultural contexts, undergoing shifts in the process. It will also consider broader questions of language and representation in a globalized world.
Topics covered will include the shifting status of the translator and translated text over time, theories of translation loss and gain; equivalence, and domestication / foreignisation. It will also explore concepts of untranslatability and of translation as negotiation, intercultural mediation, and as a transcultural process.
