19-20 PY1998: Department Specific Skills

Introduction:

This module is designed to help you consolidate the academic skills you have learned over the first two terms, to make the transition to working in the philosophy department, and to reflect on how these skills will be useful outside of the academy.

The module will begin with an introductory session at the end of the Spring term. In this meeting we will familiarise ourselves with some of the skills that we will be developing, and we will discuss the work involved in the rest of the course.

The majority of the teaching will then take place in the first half of Summer term. We will meet on three consecutive Tuesdays. The details of these three sessions are included below.

Assessment:

There are three pieces of written assessment for this module. Each piece of work has a word limit of 1000 words. The deadlines for these assessments and their contribution to your overall grade for this module are listed below:

  • Monday 11th May (30%)
  • Monday 18th May (30%)
  • Monday 25th May (40%)

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this module. You will be able to do the following:

  1. Plan, integrate and take responsibility for your personal, career and academic development, identifying learning opportunities within your own academic programmes and extra-curricular activities.
  2. Recognise, value and evidence your learning and development both inside and outside the curriculum.
  3. Evaluate and recognise your own strengths and weaknesses and identify ways in which perceived weakness might be improved and strengths enhanced.
  4. Develop a vocabulary to communicate your development and achievement and be more able to articulate the skills and knowledge you have gained to others.
  5. Articulate your skills and achievements and the outcomes of HE explicitly
  6. Be better prepared for the demands of continuing progression of study and/or seeking employment or career development.
